More about «Ukrainian Song of the Year»
- History and significance of the national award
«Ukrainian Song of the Year» is one of the country's most prestigious music awards, founded in 2004. Initially, the project was called «Our Song», but later it was renamed to emphasize the scale and significance of the event. The author and general producer of the award is People's Artist of Ukraine Mykhailo Poplavsky, who has dedicated his life to popularizing Ukrainian culture and music. The main goal of the project is to promote the Ukrainian language and musical art. The award brings together representatives of different generations and musical genres: from young performers to legendary artists. The only prerequisite for participation is to perform a song in Ukrainian.
- The birth of the project and its evolution
In the early 2000s, the Ukrainian music market was heavily influenced by foreign music. According to experts, about 90% of radio and television airtime was occupied by foreign artists. This is what prompted Mykhailo Poplavsky and a team of like-minded people to create a project that would help Ukrainian artists make themselves known and attract the attention of a wide audience.
Every year, the event grew larger, expanding its geography and audience. One of the key moments in the history of the award was 2012, when the project entered the international arena. The unprecedented «Song Unites Us!» telethon took place then, and was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as «The Longest Live Music Television National Song Marathon.» The marathon lasted 110 hours, 3 minutes and 27 seconds without interruptions for advertising or news. More than three thousand performers took part in it, representing all possible genres — from folk music to modern hits. The broadcast covered 155 countries, revealing the richness of Ukrainian music culture to the world.
- International recognition and cooperation
In 2017, the award ceremony was held for the first time outside Ukraine — in Warsaw. This event was an important step in popularizing Ukrainian music among the European audience. The audience was able to see the variety of styles and emotions conveyed by Ukrainian performers: from lyrical ballads to energetic patriotic compositions.
In 2019, the famous Ukrainian artist Oleh Vynnyk joined the management of the award. Since then, the project has gained a new lease of life and even more popularity. The Ukrainian Song of the Year 2019 award ceremony took place on February 12, 2020, at the National Palace of Arts «Ukraine». Its TV premiere was shown on Ukraina TV channel on April 18 of the same year. Katya Tsaryk was the director and Kateryna Osadcha and Yuriy Gorbunov were the hosts. Participants were selected based on feedback on social media, rotations on radio stations and TV shows.
- The current stage of development
On May 20, 2021 (Vyshyvanka Day), a ceremony was held to mark the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. The hosts were Mykhailo Poplavsky and Oleg Vynnyk. And in 2021, the anniversary award ceremony took place on February 16, the Day of Unity of Ukrainians. It was hosted by Tina Karol, Mykhailo Poplavsky, Lilia Rebryk, and Hryhoriy Reshetnyk.
Traditionally, the award is presented in several nominations, such as «Legend of Ukrainian Song», «Pride of Ukrainian Song» and «Hope of Ukrainian Song». The winners are not only performers, but also lyricists and composers who have made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian music.
